Suicide attack at Kandahar airport 'kills six'

At least six civilians have been killed in a suicide attack at the international airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, officials say.

The attack happened outside the perimeter of the airport, where thousands of foreign troops are based.

Earlier this month a series of blasts killed at least 12 people in the city.

Those attacks shattered the relative peace seen in Kandahar in recent months. The province is considered to be the spiritual home of the Taliban.

Analysts said the bombs highlighted the fragile security situation in Kandahar, which is also the birthplace of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Officials say the latest attack was aimed at the foreign forces stationed at the airfield. The suicide attacker reached the main gate of the airport and then detonated his explosives.

It is unclear if he was on foot or in a vehicle. Details are still coming in.
